Chrome OS News & Update: Microsoft Office For Every Chromebook Now Accessible; Google Play Store Now Available!

Microsoft has officially opened its support for Microsoft Office on Android for Chrome OS last November 14. Chromebook users will now have a full access to all programs and services that every Microsoft Office users enjoy.

Chrome OS is a Google operating system based on the Linux kernel that is primarily using Google Chrome browser as its user interface. Recently, Chromebook users were having difficulty in downloading Microsoft Office to their device, but it is no longer the case.

Microsoft Office on Android for Chrome OS is now fully supported for all Chromebook users. This improvement was an answer to previous complaints that some Chromebook users were not able to use MS Office. The issue started when users of Asus Chromebook Flip received an error stating 'unsupported on this device' when attempting to download the MS Office software.

According to Gadgets360, Chromebook users have thought that Microsoft was blocking the use of its software on Chrome OS. Microsoft responded quickly and said that it was not a block, but instead a software glitch.

A statement was released by Microsoft saying that Microsoft Office on Android to Chrome OS is fully accessible via the Google Play Store. Since Google Play on Chrome OS is still in Beta they are partnering with Google to deliver the best experience for Chromebook users. Microsoft added that their vision is to make the apps available on all compatible devices by general availability.

Microsoft's strategy in making it available to all devices does not mean that it will be free. While most Chromebook users can download Microsoft Office, other Chrome OS users will not get this full access for free. If a Chromebook has a screen larger than 10.1-inches, editing in Microsoft Office is not free of charge.

According to 9to5Google, Microsoft said that an Office 365 subscription is needed for those who own a Chromebook with a display size larger than 10.1-inches. This rule was also applied to an iPad Pro with 12.9-inch display size. Chrome OS users can subscribe to individual Office 365 Personal for $6.99 per month, or $69.99 a year.

Meanwhile, Google Play store is now available for download for Chrome OS users, which means Chromebook owners will have an access to over 1 million Android apps. You can get this update by switching your device to the Developer channel.

Users can go to settings menu by clicking the gear icon at the bottom right-hand corner, click About Chrome OS, then More Info, then click Change channel and choose Developer. Once your Chromebook restarts, Google Play store will be in front of your screen.
