Need For Speed: Rivals Coming To Current And Next-Gen Consoles, Skips Wii U

Electronic Arts has confirmed that its next Need for Speed title is being developed for both the current and next-generation consoles. The announcement makes us believe that Need for Speed: Rivals would be one of the launch titles for the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4 game consoles.

The game will launch on current generation consoles including PS3, Xbox 360 and will also come on Windows PC on Nov. 19, 2013 while it will arrive sometime later this year for the Xbox One and PS4. However, according to Polygon, EA does not have plans to launch the title, being developed with its Frostbite 3 engine, on Nintendo's Wii U.

A successor to Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Rivals will be the first game from Swedish studio Ghost Games which as the developer claims seeks to capture "the adrenaline and intensity of the street's ultimate rivalry between cops and racers, in a stunning open road environment." Criterion Games, the creator of Need for Speed: Most Wanted, will assist in the development of the new title.

Unlike the previous version, the title offers players with the option of playing either as a police driver or an illegal street racer, with each having their own set of challenges and rewards. Players will be able to unlocking new cars, move their ranks, customize and pursuit or escape technology to use against their opponents.

As the report notes, Need for Speed: Rivals will "feature seamless drop-in, drop-out racing with online friends using a feature called AllDrive, letting friends appear in your open world to race, chase or evade either alongside or against you." With Autolog, players will be able to compare stats and challenge their friends anytime, anywhere and share their accomplishments with both friends and rivals.
