In "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13, Episode 8, actor Patrick Dempsey made an unexpected cameo appearance through his character Dr. Derek Shepherd. In the episode, Derek appeared as a vivid vision in front of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo).
After a long and tiring day at work, Meredith asked how to keep going and to not give up. while it was sometimes easy by playing games inside your head and making up someone, Meredith thought that she needs to do whatever keeps her going. This is where Derek appears in the "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 episode.
Although it was a very brief one, Dempsey's appearance in the episode stirred a lot of rumors, especially pertaining to the original characters to reprise their respective roles. The primary candidate is Dr. Cristina Yan, portrayed by the original "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 star Sandra Oh.
Sandra Oh's character left "Grey's Anatomy" during the Season 10 finale episode. Dr. Cristina Yang accepted a job offer to finally run the hospital that was built by her former lover, Dr. Preston Burke. While nothing is official yet, many "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 fans remain hopeful that she will return for the season.
Of all the original "Grey's Anatomy" characters, Cristina is the most highly likely to return, given that her departure was caused only to move away geographically, as opposed to Derek who actually passed away. Despite this, Sandra Oh herself has already confirmed that she does not plan to return to "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 anytime soon. The reason behind her departure from the show remains unclear.
With Derek's brief cameo in "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 Episode 8, fans are still hoping for Dr. Yang to return to the show. With the high-paced drama that the season is currently giving its fans, Cristina could certainly get in the mix. "Grey's Anatomy" is now on its midseason break, and will return on January 2017.
