Halo 5’s ‘early announcement’ for Xbox One explained

While we continue to deal with the next Halo title on the cards – Halo 5 – one thing’s for sure: we might not get anything in particular about the game until the Xbox One becomes available for fans officially. However, as we keep a check on the game until it gets a final release, there are different sources mentioning different things.

Recently, Microsoft exec Phil Spencer provided an explanation as to why Halo 5 was announced for Xbox One so early with so little information. The explanation came via an interview with IGN, with the vice president at Microsoft Game Studios revealing that previous games in the series usually appear in at least two Electronic Entertainment Expo events before officially released.

The speculation related to the game started when a surprise video featuring a cloaked Master Chief walking slowly through the desert was showcased. However, in reply to this, Spencer stated: “There was no ambiguity in not putting a number after the game. For me, what we showed wasn’t the game. Nobody should be confused on that.”

“I didn’t really want to try to show something that was clearly a thought piece by the studio around where Master Chief is in his journey, and then drop the name after it and be somewhat disingenuous about that being the game.”

Spencer, as if contradicting his own statement, further added: “But I did want Bonnie to come out and say, ‘First-person shooter. Master Chief.’ Because they’ll get the questions – ‘Hey, is this ODST? What are you guys doing?’ Bonnie comes out and reaffirms that 343 is building this game. It’s Master Chief. It’s a first-person shooter at 60 frames per second. It’s coming in 2014.”

There have been quite a few speculations related to the Halo trailer shown at E3 a couple of weeks ago with fans relating the trailer to a brand new Halo title that carries forward Master chief’s journey at the end of Halo 4. However, if that indeed is true, then fans might as well be prepared to let go of any possibilities of a fan-requested Halo 2 Anniversary, since that game’s tenth birthday happens the same year.

Spencer took to the topic by stating: “The Halo Anniversary that we did was as much about the launch of the first Xbox as well. It was a culmination of many things coming together. It would probably run out of steam if we were trying to think about, ‘Okay, what’s 10 years old now?’ It’s definitely more from the game itself, the experience that we’re able to bring to market. Less about ‘Is the last digit a zero?’ in terms of its anniversary.”

Halo 5 is yet to receive any real confirmation as of now.
