Scamps return to Tamriel in The Elder Scrolls Online [Trailer]

We've all had our bouts with various Daedra in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, running fetch quests and often getting little in return. Now, we've learned that one race of their mischevious little servants, the scamps, are set to enter the realm once again.

First appearing in Morrowind and later in Oblivion, the otherworldy nuisances are returning with a vengeance in Bethesda's upcoming MMORPG, The Elder Scrolls Online.

A new video has popped up showing that the pesky critters have evolved from a mere annoyance, to a swarming band with the potential to seriously wreck your stuff up.

As you can see, the scamp features a new re-design, and new powers alongside the new look. The creature may be pint-sized, but the scamp is now certainly nothing to scoff at. It now boasts the ability to shoot fireballs directly from his gnarled fingers, or have them rain down from the sky like a biblical apocalypse. Suffice it to say, a small gathering of these guys can make for a rather unhappy time.

A developer's diary from the MMO's official site offered a few more details on the scamps' new style:

"In ESO, we wanted the scamp to have a big personality despite his diminutive stature. As always, we looked carefully at the existing art and lore for the scamp when we began creating concept art. Our artists wanted to capture the scamp's agility and attitude in their concepts to give our animators a good base to work from, since animations would be so important in giving the scamp a unique feel.

"Even though the
Elder Scrolls setting is generally serious, we all know that there's plenty of humor to be found. The scamp's behaviors (especially its melodramatic death animation) can be comical, but they fit its size and attitude very well."

"The scamp's voice also has a little humor to it. Several of the monsters in
ESO speak their own special languages that aren't comprehensible to the player. Every now and then, you'll hear the scamp gibbering away crazily in its own little language, which is known to get a laugh or two when noticed. Be careful, though! The scamp is still dangerous, and you may find yourself locked in a deadly, fiery battle if you spend too long giggling."

The scamps appearance clues us in a bit more about the game's story, set 1000 years before the events of Skyrim, when Daedra and their creatures were considerably more numerous, and free to roam about the lands later reserved for more humanoid races.

A number of other previous races, creatures, and settings are set to factor into The Elder Scrolls Online in one way or another. We'll keep you posted as Bethesda reveals more information about all of the above. In the mean time, check out the new video of the re-designed scamp that's sure to prove a challenge to Elder Scrolls newcomers.
