CONSOLES

Xbox One will have fixed DMR framerate and resolution

When Microsoft first revealed the upcoming next generation Xbox One console, the company faced a barrage of criticisms from fans and critics alike following the then controversial DRM policies that would be imposed on those who own the console. However, not only did Microsoft manage to remove a number of those policies, but it also was willing to answer a number of queries about the console. Recently, the company took to answering more of those questions in IGN-held Q&A session.

IGN reached out to Microsoft and asked them if they could clarify some of the things related to the console for the fans. During the session, Xbox One architect Marc Whitten revealed that the console’s DVR will arrive with a fixed playback of 30 frames per second, with a 720p resolution – regardless of the native settings of any game it is recording.

For those who are not aware about it, one of the most noted features of the Xbox One is that the built-in DVR will record the last five minutes of gameplay for players, while also allowing Xbox Gold members to stream live gameplay to Twitch.

On being asked whether the Game DVR will capture footages at the source resolution and as to where these Game DVR clips will be uploaded to, Whitten stated: “Game DVR captures beautiful clips at 720p 30fps. The first thing you’ll see with our game DVR is the integration of our Upload service on the console. This service allows you to manage, edit, and share your content. Your clips are stored in the cloud. Also, you’ll see games making ‘magic moment’ videos of your gameplay based on the game DVR functionality – all seamlessly integrated.”

“You’ll be able to see these clips in the Xbox One Guide, in your own game DVR collection, and when you are looking at gamercards on the system. You’ll also see games take advantage of this platform capability and do interesting things to integrate captured game footage into the game experience itself,” he added.

Additionally, on the function of the Xbox Live Arcade work on Xbox One, and whether it will even exist for the console in the first place or not, Whitten assured that there is no difference between games in the store and that “games are games are games! You’ll find them in the same pivots (most popular, new, etc.) and we’ll be highlighting them in our dashboard experience. And of course – like all of your digital games content – you can play them on any Xbox One, and anyone can play them on your Xbox One.”

The Xbox One is currently scheduled for a November 2013 release.
