Luigi coming to Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS

Coupled with Nintendo declaring 2013 the year of Luigi and all, not to mention his previous appearances, it should come as no surprise that Nintendo confirmed the other plumber's return to the latest edition of Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo's Global President Satoru Iwata confirmed the news during today's episode of Nintendo Direct, showing some shots of the plumber taking on Smash newcomers, Megaman and WiiFit Trainer, as well as Pit from Kid Icarus (seen above).

The plumber will be available on both editions of the new Smash, both the Wii U and 3DS. He returns along with other Smash veterans Link, Mario, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Samus, Fox, Pikachu, Pit, and Kirby. Captain Olimar was also recently announced.

A new Smash Bros. game was announced back in 2011, and Super Smash Bros. was officially unveiled at this year's E3. A complete roster hasn't been revealed yet. The game is the first of the series to be developed by Namco Bandai, so it's thought that some of the developer's classic characters could be possible candidates for inclusion as well; Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and others have all been suggested as possibilities.

It's the first time the game will be available on a mobile platform. Fans were hopeful that cross-play would be a possibility, but as the game's director Masahiro Sakurai explained to Joystiq, the lack of cross play is because each version of Super Smash Bros., Wii U and 3DS, each has its own variety of stages unique to the platform. While cross play has been eliminated, the two versions can still allegedly interact with each other. Sakurai said that players would have the ability to trade customized characters between the two versions.

The new Super Smash Bros. is due for release some time in 2014. No specific date has been announced.
