Thief is not about ‘pushing more polygons’: Eidos

Eidos Montreal’s upcoming action-adventure stealth title Thief is expected to follow the footsteps of its predecessor and will see the return of Garrett – only this time, the new Thief sees Garrett making his way to next generation (and also current gen) consoles. Now more on the game has been revealed by the company is accordance with the game’s release on next generation consoles.

Speaking to the Official Xbox Magazine in an interview, producer Stephane Roy talked about Thief’s ultra-realistic graphics and if the game will be able to live up to the heightened standard set by other launch titles in the industry and even the first game in the franchise.

"It's not a question of pushing more polygons, but convincing you that you are part of this city," he stated. With the last Thief game, Deadly Shadows, arriving about nine years ago, Roy admitted that finding the perfect balance between what fans loved about the original games and modernization of the current game has been one of the most "challenging" factors during the game’s development.

"We had to find a team," he said. "It was really important for us to understand what Thief is. But at the same time, it's really important that if it's your first time playing the game you won't be penalized."

Roy also went on to admit that “sometimes technical limitation can be a good thing. A long time ago, it was either dark or light. Today, it's real life. But it does make things more complicated for us. We have to create a [world] you have to be able to read, but if it's too black and white you won't believe in it."

Thief takes place in a steampunk metropolis which is also inspired by Victorian aesthetics. Garrett has been away from his hometown for a long time, and upon returning, finds out that the city is now being ruled over by a tyrant called 'The Baron'. While "The City" is infested by a plague, the rich continue to live in good fortune, and Garrett intends to exploit the situation at his favor.

“As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart,” the official page states.

Thief is currently scheduled to release on PC, PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 3, and Xbox One & Xbox 360 in 2014.
