CONSOLES

Sony reveals the PlayStation 4 launch accessories

Sony has officially confirmed that at least two accessories will be available alongside the PlayStation 4 once the console launches in November later this year.

First up, there will be a DualShock 4 Charging Station that can simultaneously charge two PS4 contollers at once. But you'll only need them should you buy an extra controller, as the next-gen system only comes with one at launch. It's expected to retail for around $40. Judging from the design (seen above), it's the sort of thing meant for overnight charging. It will charge the controllers via the base mounted ports. It's a nifty device, but ultimately unecesarry, as you'll be able to charge the controller by plugging it into the console, ala the PS3. Sony hasn't established an exact lifespan of the DualShock 4 controller, so we can't say how long the charging station will take to charge each controller. The PS4 supports up to 4 controllers at any given time, so only two players will have to sit out while the controllers recharge.

Next (and last), there's the PlayStation 4 Vertical Stand. It will help be a bit of a space saver for anyone playing cramped quarters, but moreover, it also sports a a system with two lock dials located on the underside of the stand, which will ensure that console won't fall over, turning your PS4 into a $400 paperwieght. The stand will sell for approximately $25. Other than that, it seems like your garden variety piece of plastic.

Under the hood, the PS4 boasts Supercharged PC architecture, X86 CPU, Enhanced PC GPU, 8GB Unified Memory, Local HDD. It will support the same PlayStation Plus service as the Vita and PS3. However, a Plus subscription will be required for online multiplayer games, but not for additional media services like Netflix. Sony has also updated the Dual Shock controllers with a touch screen and improved shoulder triggers.

The PS4 is set to release on November 15 in North America and on November 29 in Europe for $399. Day one games available for the system include Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Killzone Shadow Fall, Madden NFL 25, Minecraft, NBA 2K14, Watch Dogs, Need for Speed: Rivals, and more.
