Morrigan Aensland And Captain America Join 'Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite,' Developers Discuss Changes And The Battle System

Fighting game fans got a special treat during Sony's Playstation Experience 2016 last weekend. "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite" was officially revealed during the event, while a gameplay trailer was shown during the "Capcom Cup 2016" competition. Another extended gameplay video was reportedly aired by ESPN2 during their rebroadcast of the tournament. The broadcasted trailer surprised players with the inclusion of Captain America and Morrigan Aensland.

EventHubs was able to talk to Marvel Games executive producer, Mike Jones to talk about the role of Infinity Stones in "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite." Jones claims that the Infinity Stone "augments your team," It would also provide "new abilities" and has an impact on a player's match comeback potential. The executive producer notes that the Infinity Stone is nearly "like a third character."

Mike Jones also touches on the story mode for "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite." He explains that it would be a full cinematic experience. One of the game's creative directors, Bill Rosemann, added that Marvel fans would always look for a story behind the conflict. He believes that fans would like to now the reasons why the characters are fighting.

In an interview with Game Informer (via Shoryuken), Capcom's Mike Evans confirmed that assist characters are no longer part of the game mechanics in "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite." He also confirms that players are should be able to switch characters instantly anytime. He described the battle system as a kind of "freeform" combo system. The director also explained that they did not want the game's characters to function as "tools" during an assist. Moreover, the Infinity Stones will be a kind of an assist-replacement.

On a previous article by Gamenguide, the Infinity Stones were also featured in Capcom's 1995 arcade fighting game "Marvel Super Heroes." It featured 10 playable characters with 2 boss characters all taken from the Marvel universe. The most recent gameplay trailer for "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite" now confirms six playable characters.
