Google Latest Updates: Bringing Pixel Features To Its Nexus Line With Android 7.1.1 & More

Select Nexus devices will gain Pixel updates via the Android 7.1.1. All these updates are included in the beta, but the final release will roll out over several weeks to the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Nexus 9. Also included 7.1.1 are the Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus Player, Pixel C, and General Mobile 4G. Integrated under the NMF26x brand, the build numbers differ for each device.

The release should nonetheless cover fundamentally the same content, upgrading the Nexus product line with many of the same enhancements seen on the Pixel when it shipped with Android 7.1. While the Nexus 6 is still on Android 7.0, it took in the first version of Nougat substantially after the rest. Google also updates its factory images and over-the-air (OTA) pages to reflect the new builds.

Google Pixel Details The Things They Have Improved

According to The Verge, the update doesn't just include fun messaging features. Nougat 7.1.1 comes with app shortcuts on the home screen where a long press on an app icon launches certain actions on compatible apps. The update also includes a treat for Pixel owners. All devices will include raise-to-wake and double-tap, which will let users see their lock screen and notifications when the phone is picked up or tap with two fingers on a device's display to see alerts. These features were already released in Canada.

The NMF26 builds also bring into question why some Canadian Pixel owners obtained an update in late November to build NPF26J which, that includes new Moves gestures, kept the build on Android 7.1. It looks all the time more like the apparent test build was issued to a larger subgroup of users than basically planned, or that the OTA files, which were made widely available, were meant to stay private. Either way, the NMF26x builds have to roll those two new Moves gestures and a number of bug fixes into a more widespread release, cites Android Central.

Updated Factory Images For Pixel And Nexus Devices

The GIF keyboard that's available on the Pixel is also coming to updated device on supported apps, like Allo, Messenger, and Hangouts. Users can directly search for GIFs. Additionally, Google created counterparts to its male emoji earlier this year so the update will allow Android users to text an emoji of a female doctor or astronaut and other career-oriented emojis.
