'MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries' Release Date, Gameplay, News & Update: 'MechWarrior 5’ Is Likely To Have VR Support, Says Dev

One of the biggest announcements this month is the forthcoming Piranha Games masterpiece, "MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries." Along with the confirmation of the brand-new installment, the question whether or not it would support virtual reality (VR) also emerged, which is somehow confirmed by Piranha Games president himself, Russ Bullock.

"MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries" Is Designed To Support VR

A day after "MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries" was announced, a fan asked Bullock over Twitter if the game would include VR support. His reply, although vague, implies that the game could be getting VR support upon its release.

A blog post by lead programmer Brian Windover on Unreal Engine's website also serves a hint, with Windover praising the merits of the engine that has support for VR. Neither Piranha Games nor Bullock clarified if "MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries" will indeed have support headsets, but fans are hopeful nonetheless. Also, the fact that the game is using Unreal Engine 4 adds fuel to the fire, given UE4 is highly compatible with VR headsets like the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.

Inside The World Of "MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries"

"MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries" is set in the year 3015 where different states fight in deep space. Players of the game are in command of a BattleMech, an enormous fighting mechanism that rules the frontlines with its firepower.

The franchise's last solo entry was "MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries" in 2002, the expansion to the original game that was released two years before. After fourteen years, "MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries" is finally announced, but unlike "MechWarrior 4," the next release will be an original game, and not as an expansion.

Piranha Games announced "MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries" this week and gave a vague 2018 release window. The VR support news wasn't a part of the game announcement, but the possibility is mighty high, considering player demands, as well as the industry's. More updates will be delivered by the developers in the weeks to come.
