The WWE always look for new talent outside of the independent circuit to replenish the developmental system. One of the talents the company is interested in signing is 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist in freestyle wrestling, Erica Wiebe.
The 27-year-old Canadian amateur wrestler won gold in women's 75-kilogram freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was her first gold medal in the games but she could be heading to WWE in the future. In a recent interview with The Global News, she revealed that the WWE had scouted her already.
"I think bringing freestyle wrestling, which is what I love, into the context of the WWE, it's going to inject legitimacy into their organization. It's entertainment, it's like this cultural phenomenon and it's so interesting how people are so hooked on the WWE," Wiebe said.
The Ontario native added that WWE representatives invited her for a two-day tryout at the Performance Center. However, she also admitted that her signing with the company at the moment is a long shot. Nevertheless, she is very happy that the WWE took the time to show interest in her.
According to The Calgary Sun, Erica Wiebe will compete in a professional wrestling tournament in India starting on December 15. It is a month-long competition wherein she can win a minimum of $20,000 while also gaining valuable experience performing in a large crowd in the thousands.
WWE prospects usually hone their skills at the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. Wiebe has the advantage in terms of being technical but there are a lot of things she needs to learn. Amateur wrestling is far different from WWE since the latter is predetermined.
However, only a select few are given the chance to become a WWE superstar. It takes a lot of time and sacrifice to become one. The toll it takes on the mind and body causes a lot of problems but the cheers and the fans make it a lot easier.
