NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV Release Date, Specs & Latest News: Second Generation Console Set For 2017? Everything We Know So Far

The new NVIDIA Shield Android TV is rumored to be unveiled at CES in January 2017. The NVIDIA Shield Android TV was initially introduced at the Game Developers Conference 2015, was poised to become one of the best Android TV setups in history.

The NVIDIA Shield Android TV Reboot

SlashGear reported that the NVIDIA Shield Android TV reboot will feature the same name as the exiting product. The console will feature 802.11 ac WiFi support and MIMO antennas that will offer faster and more reliable internet connection.

The NVIDIA Shield Android TV will still feature 4K resolution, although it is still uncertain whether a Pro variant with higher storage capacity will also follow. The price of the upcoming TV has yet to be announced. The current version is available in regular and Pro variants.

There are talks that the NVIDIA Shield Android TV was originally scheduled to be introduced in the last quarter of 2016, but the date has since been postponed to early January 2017. The new TV setup will not be major upgrade compared to the existing unit, although it may follow the same approach as the NVIDIA Shield Tablet, which included a few features and lower price.

At CES 2017, NVIDIA may discuss how the new Shield Android TV can manage 4K content. The current setup can present 4K HDR content, offering a 60 frames per second playback and 30 frames per second capture. The current TV has wireless AC via MIMO antennas, HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 and Bluetooth 4.1/BLE.

The NVIDIA Shield Controller and Remote

9to5Google revealed that NVIDIA is also developing the next version of the Shield Controller. The current WiFi Direct connectivity may be substituted by Bluetooth Low Energy. The same may also be done on the Shield Remote.

As a result, the accessories can run for a longer period of time without affecting performance and responsiveness. However, some speculate that range may be decreased with the new adjustments. The NVIDIA Shield Controller may be slimmed down and its battery may be improved as well. More updates and details are expected at CES 2017 on January 4.
