Call of Duty: Ghosts News - Double XP Weekend for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is Live, But PSN Problems Could Spell Trouble

Call of Duty: Ghosts Holding a Double XP Weekend, But it Might Be Just Xbox One Players Who Will Get to Enjoy it

After a nice collection of patches, some Black Friday havoc, and with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 available in just about everywhere as of today, you can rest easy knowing that there's a lovely Double XP Weekend waiting for you in Call of Duty: Ghosts, and it's live right now.

Announced over two weeks ago, players were no doubt looking forward to this day. But unfortunately, it might just be Xbox One players that get to enjoy the game's first Double XP Weekend, as the PlayStation Network is having some hiccups trying to deal with all the new PS4 owners here and overseas.

In an update on Twitter and the PlayStation Blog, Sony has issued the following statement:

"We are aware that users are experiencing some disruption to the PSN service. To minimise the inconvenience we have suspended the 'redeem voucher' functionality whilst we investigate further. Unfortunately this means that money cards, product vouchers, PlayStation Plus vouchers, PS3-PS4 upgrade vouchers and any other vouchers for digital content are not redeemable at this stage. Other PSN features such as log-in, online multi-player gaming, PlayStation Plus trial, PS Store (excluding voucher redemption), trophies, messages, friends etc. are all available. We apologise and will provide an update to this announcement soon."

Servers are clogged and a bevy of gamers are reporting they can't log in. Ironic, as the PS4 beat the Xbox One in releasing first.

For those fortunate enough to get online, the event goes all this weekend, before ending Monday, Decemer 2, at 10AM PST. Besides the PSN problems, you'll still be lucky enough if you manage to get online. We learned earlier this week that Ghosts is currently the most played multiplayer game in the world.

"Around the globe, Call of Duty: Ghosts is leading the next generation. It's the #1 selling title at key retailers and it's also the most played game on Xbox One and PS4 globally," said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. "As we've said before, we've got the best community of fans in the world and we're thrilled they're coming with us to the next generation."

Already more than 1 billion multiplayer matches have been played in the game. Players have Prestiged more than 2.2 million times, earning over 3.3 trillion Experience Points (XP), according to internal gameplay statistics.

Call of Duty: Ghosts takes place in a near future following an attack from space that leaves Los Angeles virtually wiped out, and the United States' infrastructure devastated. Years later, the country is invaded by a new superpower, a conglomerate of South American nations calling itself the "Federation." What's left of America's special forces have come together to form the titular "Ghosts," and it's up to them to wage guerrilla warfare against the Federation in order to protect what remains of the United States, and drive the Federation out.

Beyond the campaign, the game's multiplayer mode, which promises a slew of different customization options for weapons, character camos, and more. Over 30 new weapons are included alongside old favorites like the UMP45 and the M4A1.

Despite not the best reviews ever for a Call of Duty game, Ghosts was a hit right out of the gate.

Players are able to peek around cover while still being able to fire, automatically mantle objects, and customize their character. Players are also able to activate environmental hazards, rather than the hazards automatically activating without player interference. It will also allow players to do some hidden sub-missions which will result in new twists in the campaign storyline.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is out now for PC, PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and Nintendo's Wii U.
