'True Detective' Season 3 Air Date, Spoilers, News & Update: HBO Exec Reveals Reneweal Is Possible? Colin Farrell, Matthew McConaughey Might Return

Since its inception, HBO's "True Detective" has somehow managed to generate a mixed bag of criticisms. Its first season was no doubt the finest piece of police drama there ever was during its stint and with Hollywood staples such as Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey on board, the show was truly a blockbuster waiting to be heralded. However, for some undetermined reason, its second outing suffered a traditional slump despite appearances from acting giants like Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams spearheading the cast. All of these have culminated to what have been the more mysterious speculation the show is currently associated to — what will become of "True Detective" Season 3?

HBO's programming executive Casey Bloys has shared that he and the team behind "True Detective" season 2 are still on all fours grabbing all the possibilities that Season 3 will still see the light of day. Moreover, Bloys has noted that the writers for the forthcoming installment have not provided the go signal yet in finally producing the script.

Bloys has added that HBO and the entire inner workings there are have all been gearing up for the upcoming season of the recently concluded, critically-acclaimed "Westworld." In this regard, most of their time will now be relegated to the Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy-heralded show — thus resulting to what people have been calling a "cancellation" in disguise. On the contrary, "True Detective" Season 3 is being "reserved" for a future release. Some circles have indicated that the show may premiere alongside 'Westworld" in 2018.

Meanwhile, stars Colin Farrell and Matthew McConaughey have both expressed their interest in appearing in the show again, after their career-boosting stints in the first and second seasons. The former may have some reservations regarding the success of the second installment but nevertheless, he was adamant that the show has provided him further acting chops. It is yet to be confirmed whether both actors are indeed coming in "True Detective" Season 3. Created and written by Nic Pizzolatto, "True Detective" has premiered on January 12, 2014. Both seasons have received positive reviews.
