New Tony Hawk Video Game Being Developed for Next Gen, Confirms Activision

Another Tony Hawk Game In Development

There's a new Tony Hawk Pro Skater game being developed. The Birdman himself confirmed the news during his Demolition Radio show on SiriusXM. "We're working on a game, we are working on a game, it's pretty cool." said Tony Hawk. A co-host, likely referring to motion capture, followed up, "It's a whole suit you have to put on."

Thanks to IGN for the catch- they also followed up with Activison, who confirmed that they were indeed working on another installment in the skating series. There's no word on which developer is working on it or any other details just yet, but the game will undoubtedly be made for the next-gen systems. Why make it at all if they're not going for something new?

By now it's been four years since Tony Hawk: Shred, the game which finally killed the long-stagnating series, with its $120 price tag that included a skateboard controller and an audience that was completely apathetic. A more recent remake of the original game, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, was more well-received, despite the added music that threatened to ruin the experience (Powerman 5000? Why do you hate us, Robomodo?)

Tony Hawk is a great example of what happens when Activision goes money-hungry. The first few installments are terrific and kicked off a whole new genre of extreme sports titles, incredible gameplay combined with some of the most compelling soundtracks ever assembled, just perfect mixes of punk, rock and hip hop. They took that good will and churned out game after game after game until gamers just didn't care any more, something like 13 games in 11 years (not including ports). It's because of this that titles like Skate were allowed to come out, try something different and be successful at it.

But hey, everyone loves to see the champ's triumphant return. For now if you need a skateboarding fix you should check out OlliOlli on the Vita, which is a much more old-school arcade take on the genre, just endlessly replayable and enjoyable. More info on the new Tony Hawk as it comes!
