Controversial Story Feature Likely Delayed in Final Fantasy 14, Dawntrail Unaffected

As Final Fantasy XIV prepares for its Dawntrail expansion, fans are curious about potential storytelling changes. However, recent remarks from director Naoki Yoshida indicate that controversial features, such as free story skipping, may not be implemented soon. With over a decade of existence and four major expansions, Final Fantasy XIV's main storyline is substantial, akin to experiencing five large RPGs in one.

What the Director Said

At a big event last year, Yoshida hinted that they might let players start the game from a new point, especially with the new Dawntrail expansion. But in a recent interview, he said they're worried it might make the game's story less special. He thinks the story is what's made the game so popular all over the world, and they want to keep it that way.

Right Now and What's Next

Players can already skip parts of the story, but it costs money and takes some effort. Many players are happy about this decision because they think the story is what brings everyone together in the game.

Even though they're not adding this feature now, they might have to think about it again in the future. The game keeps getting bigger, and they already have some ways for players to experience the story differently. As Dawntrail starts, Final Fantasy XIV wants to keep its focus on telling great stories, even if that means saying no to skipping them for free.
