SteamWorld Heist 2: Everything We Know About the Indie Game Sequel

SteamWorld Heist 2 was recently announced during this year's Nintendo Indie World showcase and brings players to the seas for a new adventure.

The sequel to the highly popular indie game also showed off what players can expect to see in the next title in the franchise. SteamWorld Heist 2 is a high-seas adventure game where players will take control of Captain Leeway.

The title will have them set sail as they endeavor to "solve the mystery of a deadly water crisis that's causing metal limbs and mechanical hearts to corrode." Similar to the original game, players can expect the sequel to have turn-based ricochet gameplay. This means that they need to be careful where they aim their bullets.

A feature that will be introduced in the sequel is a new job system which the developers said will provide a "greater level of customization and endless ways to strategize."

It was also noted that SteamWorld Heist 2 will give players a whopping 35 hours of gameplay when it releases, which is scheduled for Aug. 8, 2024, on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, according to Eurogamer.

Developer Image & Form used SteamWorld to build a universe of games that feature steampunk robots across all different gaming genres. On one hand, is SteamWorld Dig, which is a Minecraft-inspired Metroidvania. On the other hand, there is SteamWorld Quest, which gave players a deckbuilding narrative RPG.

A full-on city-building game is also seen in the franchise's SteamWorld Build. What's so good about the series itself is that every single entry is beloved by players and many of them have been considered to be excellent.

Dig 2 is considered to be one of the best Metroidvania games currently available and if SteamWorld Heist 2 can make similar levels of improvements, players are in for a treat, said GamesRadar.

SteamWorld Heist 2 is the seventh entry in the ever-growing SteamWorld universe and all of these titles are connected by a single timeline. Producer Peter Magnusson said that it is a "milestone of size and scope for the series," noting a deeper story, a greater emphasis on crew customization, and more weapons.

New Features and Mechanics

The original SteamWorld Heist, which was released in 2015 for the 3DS before being launched on other platforms later on, looked more similar to Firefly. The action-packed moments of the game took place in onboard spaceships.

Another key addition to the sequel is the new world map, which features ship-to-ship combat and heavily emphasizes exploration. Magnusson explained that they managed to revisit a feature from the original title that they thought about for a long time but had to cut out.

This is an interactive map where players sail around the sea and explore various nooks and crannies looking for hidden areas. This would allow them to set their own path in a way that was previously impossible in the first game in the series.

The new job system allows players to equip any weapon type to any character which will unlock new abilities that will carry over to other weapons. This means that players can mix and match whatever strategies suit their playstyles and preferences, according to IGN.
