Sony Announces Android KitKat 4.4 Updates For Xperia M2 Smartphones

The KitKat 4.4 Update for Xperia Phones Available Now

Sony is blasting forward with a series of Android KitKat 4.4 updates for its Xperia line of phones. On Monday, the Japanese electronics giant released updates for its Xperia M2 and M2 Dual smartphones.

The Xperia M2 Aqua Can Survive While Fully Submersed

Over the past few months, Sony has been hard at work coming up with new features for its phones running on KitKat that it's describing as pretty neat.

The phones will have an interface inspired by Sony's now flagship product, the PS4. The console's animation takes over the launch and home screens, making any gamer feel right at home on their new smartphone. You can see the specifics on the official blog post.

Android KitKat 4.4 is already building a reputation for performance, and the Xperia update includes tweaks that improve battery life and speed. Sony is also bringing integration with their fitness-focused wearable, the SmartBand SWR10.

Sony also had big news with its Xperia line this month when it announced the upcoming release of the Xperia M2 Aqua, which will be one of the most dust and water resistance smartphones on the market. According to Sony, the M2 Aqua keeps out water while completely submersed at one meter-indefinitely. When that phone is made available in the fall, it will already come powered by KitKat 4.4.

Both phones had originally launched running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean when they came out earlier this year. Sony did not mention in its announcement any plans to update other devices to KitKat 4.4.
