Destiny Becomes Best-Selling New Franchise Of All Time, Makes $325 Million Worldwide In 5 Days

Activision and Bungie's Destiny has become the best-selling new franchise of all-time, selling $325 million worldwide in its first five days on the market.

The publisher announced the figures today in a press release and proclaimed that owners logged an astounding number of hours in the game within its first week.

"Destiny fans played more than 100 million hours of the game in the first week. That's on par with the engagement levels of our most popular Call of Duty games, which obviously is an industry leader," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing. "Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can't put down their controllers. And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game."

The commercial reception is not entirely unexpected--$500 million of Destiny copies were sold to retailers by the first day. The rate that copies have moved since launch is impressive, though, and bodes well for the series' future. Critical reception has not been as positive--lukewarm review scores across much of the media are putting a damper on the game's success and halting Bungie from full celebration. Additional content is coming to Destiny--the game's first raid was only recently activated--but it remains to be seen how much the upgrades will change the core experience rather than simply add more hours of gameplay.
