New Borderlands Pre-Sequel 'Making Of' Video Discusses DLC, Introducing Laser Guns Into The Borderlands Weapons Formula

Get To Firing Your Laser In The Newest Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel "Making Of" Video

The countdown clock to the release of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! is quickly reaching its conclusion, and 2K Games is keeping the hype train moving with one last "Making Of" video on YouTube. This time, the focus is on new laser weapons and plans for DLC.

The Borderlands franchise is known for the absurd amount of guns available in each of its games. Now that the pre-sequel is taking the series into space, the developers thought it would be the perfect time to bring laser guns into the equation, introducing several new categories of weapons for the player to discover and use.

One class of laser gun is the basic kind of semi-automatic rifle, not unlike the models carried by your average Star Wars Stormtrooper. Another new type of weapon is the continuous-stream laser gun – the developers tell you to think of the Proton Pack from Ghostbusters to get an idea of how these weapons handle. Rail guns offer power and accurate beams that take a while to fire off but often allow players to take down enemies with one shot. Finally, the pre-sequel is introducing the laser shotgun, a gun that fires a multi-beam burst for close-quarters damage.

Staying loyal to Borderlands' focus on customization, the developers mention that these new types of guns can be customized with different add-ons or effects, using a Schwarzenegger-as-Mr-Freeze ice ray as one example of how versatile these laser weapons can be.

Finally, the video also touches on the issue of DLC. Inspired by the kinds of stories that Gearbox was able to tell through Borderlands 2 DLC, the pre-sequel development team is looking into building some extra content for later in the game's life cycle, though it is still too early for them to drop any hints about what we might see.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! is set to hit PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC systems on October 14.
