iPhone 6 Plus Sales Numbers Account For 41 Percent Of Phablet Sales Over Three-Month Period, According To Report

iPhone 6 Plus Sales Made Up 41 Percent Of All Phablet Sales Last Quarter

Apple's first venture into the growing phablet market proved successful, as the iPhone 6 Plus accounted for 41 percent of all phablet sales over a three-month period.

According to a report from market research group Kantar, the iPhone 6 Plus made up 41 percent of the sales of phablets – here defined as smartphones with 5.5-inch screens or larger, which the 6 Plus narrowly reaches – from the period of August-October 2014. What's even more impressive about the market dominance of this newcomer is the fact that it was only out for half of that time period, being released on September 19 of this year.

Kantar's data also shows that, as well as the iPhone 6 Plus sold, the basic iPhone 6 sold even better. For every one iPhone 6 Plus that was sold, three iPhone 6s were snapped up. The report also details just who bought one of Apple's new smartphones. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of iPhone 6 buyers already had an iOS device, though around one out of every eleven iPhone 6 customers was actually an Android defector.

iPhone 6 Plus sales notwithstanding, the phablet market is quickly gaining traction. As Kantar reports, phablet sales accounted for a full 10 percent of smartphone sales in this past quarter. In comparison, phablets made up only 3 percent of smartphone sales in the same quarter in 2013. It looks like Apple jumped on board the big-screen smartphone train at the right time.
