Nintendo eShop And Virtual Console Update: Duck Hunt, Super Mario World And After Christmas Sales

We hope you had a lovely Christmas yesterday. We also hope that maybe you received a little bit of spending cash, because even though you were off yesterday, the Nintendo eShop weekly update never rests. A day late, but no dollar short, let’s see what they have for us this, the final week of 2014.

The Ghosts Of Wishlists Past: A Lament For Consoles Never Received

This week is all about the Virtual Console for the Wii U, with three big classic titles now available.

Duck Hunt, the game that sold a million NES units back in the day is now available. The original light gun title that will live forever because of that (expletive) dog. The peripheral may be gone (it’s been replaced with the Wii U remote) but you can still experience all the target practice, that goofy music and yes, that (expletive) dog for $4.99 on the Wii U.

Two GBA Mario titles are also available: Mario Party Advance, the first and only title of the series on the GBA. It’s Mario, it’s a Party, it’s available on the Wii U for $6.99. What is more important this week, though, is Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. The GBA port ever so slightly adjusted a few levels and removed the two player option, but overall, the game (originally released on the SNES) remains one of the greatest titles of all time and is now on the Wii U for $7.99. The game also comes with the original Mario Bros.

Or, you can pick up Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Nintendo 3DS ($5.99). An update of the game that started it all, you can play through the original 1985 title and then move on to collecting special Red Coins and Yoshi Eggs in Challenge mode. A secret mode awaits those who are worthy enough. You’ve played it enough times. What’s one more, right?

Everyone’s second favorite genie, Shantae, is back with a new adventure on 3DS. Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse has our heroine teaming up with her nemesis, the nefarious pirate Risky Boots in order to save Sequin Land from an evil curse. Great modern platforming action with a whole lot of hair. Check out the trailer. $19.99

There are plenty of post-Christmas sales happening for both the 3DS and Wii U. Activision is having a huge sale on such titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze ($19.99), Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark ($14.99) and The Legend of Korra: A New Era Begins ($19.99) because even though you’re mad about the ending, you still need more Korra in your life.

Not to be outdone, but Warner Brothers Interactive is discounting several LEGO titles by up to 50%. Pick up LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham for both Wii U and 3DS, or The Hobbit on both consoles and the LEGO Movie. Act soon. The sale ends on December 31.

Hopefully you received a Wii U or a 3DS for Christmas. Now go and get some sweet games for them both. We’ll see you in 2015. Until then, keep playing.
