There have been some interesting Pokemon fan projects over the years, but Pokemon Uranium is certainly one of the more unique efforts.

The game, covered today by Kotaku, has been in development for six years as a fan passion project made in RPGMaker XP, and is currently in its forth public beta according to the official website. Pokemon Uranium is based on a new Nuclear type, caused by radiation seeping from power plants. Here's the description:

"Nuclear-type Pokemon are feral, corrupt versions of ordinary Pokemon, who won't listen to a trainer but will attack anything in sight with destructive force. The only way to beat them is to attack them fast and quick, because Nuclear-type is unstable: in exchange for being super-effective on every other type, it is also weak to every other type."

Sounds interesting, right? It's combined with a unique region, Tandor, and new characters and features. Among those are the Pokemon Speech Translator, which allows communication with humans, and Nuzlocke Mode, which is based on a popular user-created challenge that players have imposed on themselves for years to make the games more difficult. One of the rules, for instance, is that once a Pokemon faints, it cannot be revived--yikes.

Pokemon Uranium also comes with online features, which is impressive for a fan-made game. It has its own versions of the Global Trade Station and Wonder Trade, and a way to upload your team so other players can battle a CPU-controller version (you can't face off directly).
