SyFy's 12 Monkeys Remake Will Set The Mood For You; Will Sync With Your Home Lighting Setup Via iOS App

The Future Looks So Bright With The 12 Monkeys Synced Dimmer Effects From Hue Lighting

The end of the world never seemed so bright.

At least, that is the guiding philosophy behind SyFy’s 13 episode remake of the 1995 Terry Gilliam classic 12 Monkeys. The series is set to debut on Friday, January 16 at 9 p.m. and while it does concern the end of the world, it aims to light up your life in other ways. SyFy is once again teaming up with Philip Hue to sync up your television experience to your - wait for it - lights.

According to CNET, Viewers who sync up their home lighting array with SyFy’s app will have the mood set for them automatically. When the characters walk down a darkened tunnel, the lights in your house will adjust, bringing you into the mood. If it’s the bright lights of a psychiatric ward, expect to have your eyes dulled over the same as the patients.

Just download the SyFy sync app for your iPad or iPhone and make sure you have the proper Hue lights installed. (We feel the need to stress that this will only work for a very, very small percentage of people and you cannot simply download the App and expect it to work).

SyFy previously employed the tactic for Sharknado 2, though there has not been enough research done to definitively prove that the lighting effects were the reason that thing became such a huge, crazy phenomenon. Other shows will work with Hue in the future, just keep an eye out for the light bulb icon.

12 Monkeys will retell the 1995 classic, itself a remake of the beautiful short 1962 film La Jetee (The Pier), which is a brilliant, still-photo montage of memory and the effects of time. Terry Gilliam took the concept and created one of the tightest scripted time travel movies ever put on celluloid. The remake stars Aaron Stanford as time traveler James Cole (Bruce Willis in the original), with Emily Hampshire taking over the role that Brad Pitt scored an Oscar nomination for, and Amanda Schull filling the shoes of Madeleine Stowe.

One wonders if the show will end in much the same way as film, in which nothing changes.

12 Monkeys is eerily similar in concept to SyFy’s other time traveling series Continuum, which also features a group of characters traveling back in time to “unmake history”, and prevent the spread of a deadly disease that nearly wipes out humanity.

The theme to the original film is simply stellar. Have a listen, and get your lights ready. 12 Monkeys is almost upon us.
