Ready Player One Sequel Being Developed By Original Author, Says Screenwriter Of Film Adaptation

Author Ernest Cline Is Developing A Ready Player One Sequel; Just What Would It Be About?

I will admit that when I heard that Ernest Cline is considering creating a sequel to his beloved 2011 novel Ready Player One - which runs the large chance of being titled Ready Player Two - I was a bit taken aback.

Spoilers to follow, but the book ends with the main character essentially becoming God, at least in a digital sense of the things. There is nothing he cannot do, he can touch another character's in-game avatar and voila, that character can be no more. Seems a little too... overpowered to be relatable.

A lot of the fun from Ready Player One comes from the fact that it felt like such a self-contained title. That is not to say Cline, who successfully wove a great narrative chock full of pop culture and video game references, is not up to the task.

Noooooo! Amplitude Has Been Delayed

According to Zak Penn, who is penning the screenplay to the film adaptation, it's a definite possibility. In speaking with Den of Geek, "Ernie's working on a sequel to it [Ready Player One], and it is one of those great ideas that has endless possibilities," Penn said. "And to a certain extent, the longer it exists and the more Ernie thinks about it, the more he comes up with."

The film adaptation of Ready Player One is happening at Warner Bros. No director is attached at this time, but we're all still hoping for Edgar Wright, whose manic, hyperkinetic sensibilities would work very well in a movie that's as full-to-bursting as this one needs to be.

In the meantime, have you tried out all those MS DOS games that were undoubtedly an inspiration to Cline? They're all free!
