Magic The Gathering Fate Reforged Expansion Releases Friday: Second Set In Khans Of Tarkir Block

Fate Reforged, The Latest Expansion For Magic: The Gathering Set To Release Tomorrow

Magic: The Gathering, the original and some might say still the best collectible card game, is set to release its next expansion, Fate Reforged.

The second of three sets in the Asian inspired Khans of Tarkir block, Fate Reforged adds 185 new cards to the venerable strategy title. The set adds three new clan-specific mechanics to the game: Bolster (Abzan) Dash (Mardu) and Manifest (available to all). Prowess, Ferocious, and Delve will return from the block's titular first set.

Fate Reforged takes place some 1200 hundreds year before the events of KoT. The five clans exist in a slightly different form, while dragons still rule the skies. Most importantly, though: fate is up for grabs. The planeswalker Sarkhan Vol, bringing you along for backup, has journeyed back to change things; prevent the death of Ugin at the hands of the legendary Nicol Bolas and shift the history of Tarkir in ways unimagined.

Modal abilities have also come to Reforged. Creatures were often imbued with a 'summoning effect', an ability that is triggered when it arrives onto the battlefield. The new modal line of creatures allow you to choose between two different abilities, allowing for slightly greater strategic options.

Khans of Tarkir also represents the last of the standard three-set block that Wizards of the Coast has utilized for the last 15 years. The last set, Dragons of Tarkir, will release on March 23. After which, Wizards of the Coast will start releasing set blocks of two sets each every year, and doing away with the annual Magic Core set.

"There will be a large fall expansion and small winter expansion set in World #1," said Wizard's dev Mark Rosewater, "Then there will be a large spring expansion and a small summer expansion, usually set in World #2. The first two sets will be part of one block and the second two sets will usually be part of a second."
