Nintendo Mobile App Will Bring Mii Avatars To Social Media

Get Ready, Twitter: Nintendo Is Bringing Mii Avatars To Social Media

Get your Miis ready for Twitter, folks.

Nintendo has revealed plans for a service that will move your Mii characters to social media, reports Nikkei (via Polygon). The nature of the feature isn't exactly clear, but Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explained that the concept has been planned and is on the way.

Nintendo has traditionally been opposed to moving its properties onto smartphones and tablets in the form of full games, but this app will signify at least some level of change in that direction.

"For example, some Nintendo game consoles incorporate Mii, which creates a digital avatar to represent players. It would be fun for players to use their Mii characters as icons on social media. We are currently developing an application that will allow users to do that. The app will be announced around the time our full-year results are released."

Nintendo's fiscal year will end on March 31, so the app could launch in a little over a month. Iwata only mentioned that the avatars would be used as icons on social media--I imagine profile pictures and the like. It's unclear if there will be any additional functionality other than using your Mii as your image.
