Bandai Namco Games has just begun sending out keys for the Alpha test of their new MOBA title, Supernova.

I know what you're thinking: dear god, another MOBA? And, if you're one of the cool kids, 'Wait, they turned that amazing...ly bad James Spader movie into a video game?! Yes, and (unfortunately), no.

The MOBA market is huge and at this point in its lifecycle, in need of something new to make it work. Strife has given the genre a fresh new coat of paint with its third person action view, among other things, and Supernova intends to shake up the formula in its own way, too. Every MOBA features the same things: heroes, creeps, buildings and lanes. Most games try to adjust the heroes, as those are the main units you play with. Supernova, however, will also be adjusting the way the creeps operate.

Before, creeps mindlessly shuffled forth to their doom along their set lane, occasionally gaining power-ups from team experience or the presence of a nearby hero. Supernova will give you greater control over your army by implementing more RTS elements into their customization. Think League of Legends mixed with Starcraft.

Again, thank you Blizzard.

Over at Polygon, Arthur Gies has a great write-up on his brief experience with the title and how the units operate. "In my time with Supernova, the difference in creep approach didn't become apparent early on. At first, battles look much like they do in other MOBAs, with heroes playing cat and mouse around towers, looking for openings to score hits and harass their opponents while avoiding ganks from elsewhere. But as matches progress, the AI-controlled waves developed into massive forces more than capable of taking on almost any single hero in short order, and end-game battles look like base sieges from other sci-fi RTS games."

"It's easy to forget those AI units early on, but later, they can turn the tide in a big way." he added.

Sounds pretty fun.

On the hero front, "Supernova aims to take traditional MOBA gameplay another step further with a crafting mechanism that allows players to improve their battle prowess by combining drops from their matches to create durable boosts to the abilities of their favorite commanders. This ability allows players to extend their strategies beyond their chosen commanders' base abilities."

The game is set for PC launch later this year. You can head over to the official page and sign up for your chance to get in on the Alpha test.
