The two companies today announced that a developer version of the device will be out this spring, and the consumer edition will release later this year.

The official site describes a 1200 x 1080 display in front of each eye for high definition viewing, displaying "photorealistic images" at an impressive 90 frames per second. HTC claims the smooth framerate eliminates the "jittering" experienced with other VR devices, and the screens provide 360 degree views. The Vive employs a gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor to track motion and head rotation to one-tenth of a degree.

Valve's participation is obviously a huge part of the device as one of the leading software developers in the world. Its SteamVR technology will be integrated into the product--here's the picture HTC paints for us:

"Imagine standing on the bridge of a starship rocketing across the galaxy, or strolling through the streets of ancient Rome, or shrinking down to subatomic size and watching molecules collide. Now Re-imagine.

"HTC's Vive headset, powered by SteamVR, pulls those virtual worlds off your computer screen and into your home. You'll experience sights and sounds vivid and lifelike enough to transport you to another place, another time-whole new realities with limitless possibilities."
