'Final Fantasy Type 0 HD' Launch Trailer Announces A Grimmer And Darker JRPG

Today is a day long awaited: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is out in stores now, and there's a launch trailer to commemorate the occasion.

Look Heavensward, And Preorder The Final Fantasy XIV Expansion Today

While I suspect that the sheer number of trailers released over the past several months have pretty much spoiled all of the 40+ hour campaign (mostly via cinematics), we can't help but be moved by what we're seeing. War, darkness, despair, a new type of Final Fantasy indeed.

The critics are generally positive towards the Monster Hunter-esque title, which is a remake of the PSP title from 2011. The combat is nearly universally praised, though the game suffers from a bit of Hobbit-itis: too many supporting characters that aren't as well developed across the storyline.

Nintendo Strikes A Deal With DeNA, Announces New Console And Membership Service

"Western audiences are the reason we decided to bring Final Fantasy Type-0 to the high definition consoles," said Director Hajime Tabata. "We also wanted to invite players to experience a small taste of what's to come in Final Fantasy XV."

If you were lucky or savvy enough to pre-order Type-0, you gain access to the FF XV demo, titled Episode Duscae. Square Enix has been adamant in their stance that only people who buy Type-0 will get a chance at the XV demo. Somehow, I believe them this time, though we'll see in time.

Type-0 is part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series of FF games. Players step into the fray as Class Zero, a group of 14 cadets from an elite military academy in the Dominion of Rubrum in the crystal city state empire of Orience. When the Militesi Empire launches a vicious assault on its neighbors, the fate of the world rests on the cadets, each possessing his or her own unique powers and abilities.
