Teemu Selänne Keeps NHL '94 Roster Alive

With Teemu Selänne recently confirming his return to the Annaheim Ducks, he and two other players (according to Wikipedia) remain as the only active NHL players from what is widely considered to be one of the best games of the NHL franchise, NHL '94.

Because of NHL 94's (mostly) realistic and action-packed gameplay, the game is frequently mentioned in "all-time top sports game" lists. It was even included in the PlayStation 2 version of NHL '06 as a fan service. NHL '94 introduced the one timer, a move where a player shoots the puck directly off of a pass. '94's one-timer was in fact so effective that it would become the scoring method of choice for most players. It's since earned an almost cult-like following.

There even exists a number of web sites, some boasting close to 4000 members, that plays hosts to online leagues and tournaments, and a blog that keeps track of which players are left.

Other features of the game included better all-around control of players, the ability to shatter glass, being able to save your records, and the four modes - Regular Season, Playoffs, Best of Seven Playoffs, and Shootout. Also introduced were team-specific organ songs played at the start of periods and after goals-examples included the Hartford Whalers' trademark "Brass Bonanza", "When the Saints Go Marching In" for the St. Louis Blues, "The Sabre Dance" for the Buffalo Sabres, and the Chicago Blackhawks theme song "Here Come the Hawks".

While fans were dismayed that fighting was removed, you could at least make Gretzky's head bleed.
