Halo Championship Series Iron Games Atlanta Recap: Evil Geniuses Win Again, New Rosters Rise To The Top

The first live tournament event of Halo Championship Series' second season took place this weekend, with Evil Geniuses once again walking away with first place at Iron Games Atlanta.

Season 1 champions EG (Snipedown, Roy, Lunchbox, Lethul) took home the $10,000 biggest prize by advancing all the way through the winners bracket. Denial (Mikwen, Chig, APG, Heinz) did take a series off them in the final, but would have had to pull that off two times in a row given that they had come through the losers bracket.

Winning a live tournament is arguably an even bigger deal this season, as there are only three in-person events including the final. There will now be a series of online cups for quite a while--one is scheduled every weekend (minus a break for E3 in June) all the way until the Indianapolis $50,000 tournament on June 26. The $150,000 Season 2 final will take place at ESL's studio in Burbank, California on July 25.

EG has been absolutely dominant since being forced to drop Pistola (through an injury) for Lethul last season. Many team rosters were changed and mixed ahead of Season 2 to attempt to pull level with the reigning champs, including Denial's. The new-look team came close, but will require a bit more practice to close out those games against such a good squad. Cloud9 also impressed despite its online struggles, and CLG (who held the number one seed for much of last season) will be disappointed with its 5th place finish.

Winterfox also did well, and there's a lot of potential in the teams as things stand--follow along as the year progresses to see if anyone can topple Evil Geniuses. Here are the finishes and prize money for IG Atlanta:

1. Evil Geniuses (Snipedown, Roy, Lunchbox, Lethul): $10,000

2. Denial (Mikwen, Chig, APG, Heinz): $6,000

3. Cloud9 (Hysteria, Fearitself, Pistola, VictoryX): $4,000

4. Winterfox (Randa, Naded, Ryanoob, Contra): $2,400

5. Counter Logic Gaming (Ogre 2, Snakebite, Royal 2, Cloud): $1,600

6. Optic (Ace, Flamesword, Maniac, Assault): $1,000

7. Noble Black (Arkanum, Aries, Ninja, Prototype): N/A

8. Velocity (Nemassist, Suspector, LifeStyle, Cratos): N/A
