Xbox One Play Anywhere Update: Service Launch In September; All Future Microsoft Titles To Be Supported; First Games Announced!

Last month at E3 2016, Microsoft announced the Xbox Play Anywhere program, which would allow cross-buy and cross-play for selected games on both Windows 10 and the Xbox One.

Now, in a conversation with Polygon, Microsoft has confirmed that the service will be launching on September 13. With the Play Anywhere program, you can purchase a supported title once on either your PC or your gaming console, and you'll be able to get playable copies for both.

You'll also get unified achievement tracking, save games, progress, and trophies whether you play on your PC or Xbox One, and you'll even get to play with both PC and Xbox One players in multiplayer games. DLC you purchase will work for both platforms as well.

The first game to be released under the Play Anywhere program will be "ReCore," the action-adventure platformer by Megaman creator Keiji Inafune, to be followed by "Forza Horizon 3," "Gears of War 4," "Halo Wars 2," "Sea of Thieves," and many others. Microsoft Corporate VP Yusuf Mehdi also announced on the Windows blog that all future titles published by Microsoft Studios will participate in the program, and can be purchased from the Windows Store. "Halo 6" on PC, anyone?

In order to make use of Play Anywhere, you must download the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, coming on August 2, which will feature not only Play Anywhere support but also a variety of other new features for the operating system. PC users will be getting an update to the Edge browser, as well as the new Windows Ink feature for pen input, and more.

You'll also need the Xbox One summer update, which brings Windows 10's voice assistant Cortana to your console, as well as improvements to sharing, finding friends through Facebook, a more streamlined interface for your Game Collection, and others.
