'The Last of Us 2' Release Date, News, Updates: Game Sequel Halted for 'Uncharted 4'; Will Studio Ever Continue Production?

Three years ago, Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us" captured the hearts and minds of gamers all over the globe when it was released to highly positive reviews.

The game, which was set in post-apocalyptic America, enabled gamers to play the hero Joel, as he fights to survive alongside Ellie, who may be the key to the cure. The Naughty Dog game received more than 240 Game of the Year Awards from various award-giving bodies, and was able to sell 1.3 million units within the first seven days of release.

With the massive success of the 2013 game, it isn't a surprise that fans and gamers are clamoring for "The Last of Us 2" to this day. It is rather unfortunate, however, that the studio had only created a prototype for the sequel, before shelving it in place of the third-person shooter video game, "Unchartered 4," which was released in May.

"When Bruce [Straley] and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last of Us 2 with characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas," Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann explained, as per Games Radar. "And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4."

But now that "Unchartered 4" is done, is there any chance for a "The Last of Us 2" release? Naughty Dog is keeping awfully quiet, most likely because they're still waiting for the dust to settle on "Unchartered 4." However, "The Last of Us" Remastered, which was released in 2014, is currently retailing at $7.99 for PlayStation, so fans can relive the glory of the game.

Unfortunately for "The Last of Us" movie, that too is on hold. Druckmann said, as per Gamespot, that they already have a writer for the film and even had a table read. Renowned producer Sam Raimi is set to produce, while "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams is being eyed for the role of Ellie, if production begins soon. Unfortunately, no plans have been set in stone, and fans have yet to wait for any developments on both the game and movie ends of it.
