Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Grosses Over $1 Billion

Activision announced today that the latest title in the Call of Duty franchise has reached yet another record, as Black Ops 2 has managed to gross over $1 billion in retail sales in the past 15 days, a truly impressive feat for a game that's been out since mid-November.

"The release of Call of Duty has been one of the most significant entertainment events of each of the last six years," said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. "Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for Harry Potter and Star Wars, the two most successful movie franchises of all time."

The $1 billion mark is just another milestone for the shooter. Shortly after the game's launch, it was revealed that Black Ops 2 managed to set records as Amazon's most pre-ordered game ever. It also managed to hit a sell-through of over $500 million worldwide in the first 24 hours of its release, according to Chart-Track, and GameStop president Tony Bartel wrote that the retailer sold more than 1 million units worldwide, and that "'Black Ops II' is shaping up to be our biggest game launch of all time."

The game sees players assume the role of Alex Mercer's son, David. As indicated by the trailer, the game is set in war-torn Los Angeles in the year 2025, and the People's Republic of China has invaded Los Angeles due to a global struggle involving rare earth minerals. At the same time, a terrorist by the name of Raul Menendez manages to infiltrate the miltary network to take over hundreds of the U.S's own automated drones, using them to attack its major cities. Sounds a bit far fetched, but it's really not.

While players will play as David throughout Black Ops 2, his father Alex will make an appearance, as will Frank Woods. Players are able to make choices throughout the game that will affect the story, including a variety of endings.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is out now for PC, PS3, Nintendo's Wii U, and Xbox 360.
