This Week in Games (2/18)

Another week, another set of new games to buy and play... Or maybe just stack next to your TV or computer.

With two high-profile action games on the way, this week marks the first retail match-up of 2013. Crysis 3, the next entry in the notoriously demanding FPS series, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Platinum Games' action-heavy Metal Gear Solid spin-off. Calling this particular pairing a competition may be a bit of a stretch: Crysis is a shooter, Rising is a technical action game reminiscent of Platinum's cult hit Bayonetta. Though there will obviously be some crossover, it stands to reason that many players will be definitively attracted to one game over the other.

Despite all their differences, they do have one thing in common. Oddly enough, both Crysis 3 and Metal Gear Rising encourage the use of antiquated weaponry in a futuristic setting: Crysis 3 is one of the many games making 2013 "the year of the bow," encouraging players to use a bow-and-arrow for stealthy kills from a distance. Metal Gear Rising is a game that began as Hideo Kojima's precision sword-slicing tech demo.

Rounding out this week's release roster are a handful of Steam releases, including indie darling The Bridge, a puzzle platformer that will make you think of Braid, even if the gameplay doesn't feel anything like it.
