Avengers Director Joss Whedon Confirms Quicksilver And Scarlet Witch For Sequel

Avengers director Joss Whedon says that super-powered twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are set to show up in Avengers 2. Whedon says that the evil twins will be the antagonist in the sequel to last year's hit film, accoring to a report

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are the children of X-Men baddie Magneto. The twins, who go under the goverment names of Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, were introduced in 1964. The real wonder twins sport unique talents that match up to their aliases. Quicksilver can move and think at supersonic speeds. Scarlet Witch can manipulate probability through the witch-like use of hexes.

In the comics the twins start out in an adversarial capacity but eventual join the Avengers in later incarnations. The sibling's roles in the original comics could lead them to their own Marvel spin-off films down the roads. Marvel has yet to decide which superheroes get movies in phase three of their current moviemaking plan.

"You know, [Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver] had a rough beginning," says Whedon.

"They're interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn't necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they're not there to make things easier. I'm not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier."

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are unlikely to meet up with their father in future films. The film rights to X-Men and Magneto are owned by Fox. The media superpower has exclusive rights to the successful film franchise that sees Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine.

Whedon's disclosure comes following a brief tease of the news last month. He told Yahoo News in April that he was trying to work in a 'brother-sister act' into Avengers 2. Whedon reported that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were one of his favorite Marvel characters at the time.

In related Avengers news, ABC is set to launch a TV show for S.H.I.E.L.D. this fall. The story will see everyone's favorite special agent Phil Coulson help a new group of heroes handle the wild world of Marvel superheroes.

Those looking forward to seeing some non-identical twin action in the next Avengers will unfortunately have to wait for a while. Avengers 2 will not be released until May 1, 2015.
