Microsoft Set Out To Win Back Xbox One Domain Names

Although Microsoft revealed its next-generation gaming console and named it Xbox One last week, the company apparently does not own the domain names XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net. And so, it has now commenced legal proceedings to claim the two domain names registered to a U.K. resident.

Both the Xbox One domain names are registered to Krasimir Ivanov in London and both registrations were created in December 2011. As the leases on the domains do not expire until late 2016, Microsoft has filed a claim with the National Arbitration Forum (Case Number 1501205) over the domains, Fusible reports.

National Arbitration Forum is the official body that settles the domain ownership disputes. The proceedings began on May 23, 2013 and are currently listed as pending.

"It appears only a single complaint was filed for both domains, which is allowed according to UDRP rules, if more than one domain being disputed is held by the same respondent, all of the names may be included in the same complaint. Rule 3(b)(vi)," the report states.

It's assumed that the Redmond, Washington, software giant may have had to hold off its motion for the domain names until the announcement of the console so that it would not tip off the public about the name that it kept secret for so long.

As it set out to fight the legal battle to win the websites, it should be noted that Microsoft has an impressive track record of successful domain name disputes. The company had successfully won back many domain names attributed to its gaming console such as XboxSmartglass.com, XboxPhone.com, XboxFitness.com, XboxMusic.com, XboxSports.com, and XboxVideo.com in the past.
