First Review For The Last of Us Is Here

It's still two weeks before Naughty Dogs PS3 exclusive The Last of Us is out, but one of the first reviews for the game has already surfaced.

Empire magazine's online arm posted a review for the post-apocalyptic adventure game a bit early. Realizing their mistake, the review was quickly taken down, but not before the internet quickly grabbed some of the review's key points. Videogamer was one of the first to grab hold and post a small portion of it, and if the review is to be believed, we're all in for a good time come June 14.

It's an "easy contender for the best game of this console generation," they say, and add, "The Last of Us is not just the finest game that Naughty Dog has yet crafted and an easy contender for the best game of this console generation, it may also prove to be gaming's Citizen Kane moment, a masterpiece that will be looked back upon favourably for decades."

"Rosebud..."

Definitely one of the more hotly anticipated games arriving this season, The Last of Us takes 14 year old Ellie and "ruthless" survivor Joel through a post-apocalyptic U.S. that's been overtaken by nature with scant bits of civilization left. What's the source of humanity's downfall? Fungus, and it's no Princess Toadstool...

The team cited the real life cordyceps fungus featured BBC's nature documentary Planet Earth as the inspiration for not only the cause of humanity's collapse, but the game's mushroom "zombies" as well.

In addition to this fungal scourge, Ellie and Joel will have to watch out for other scavengers as well.

As we've seen in various bits of footage, the gameplay in The Last of Us is third-person action, and players will take control of Joel while he protects both himself and Ellie from the different threats they encounter.

Trophies for the game were also recently uncovered. God of War: Ascension owners will be the first to get a crack at the game, courtesy of a demo that's set to go live later today, so be sure to pop that in to see what you think. For non-owners, you can check back here for our impressions.
