Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time coming in July - What you need to know

PopCap has announced that Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time is set to launch this July. The sequel to the popular mobile video game is expected to be released on July 18. PopCap's game continues the title's tower defense gameplay of using a variety of planets to stop a horde of zombies from attacking the homestead.

According to Allen Murray, Senior Producer for Plants vs. Zombies 2, the game will feature a variety of new content. He says PopCap will be quickly working on the title to make sure it reaches its planned release date.

"We're confident that players will see the love and attention we've put into this game. We've created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we're still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch," says Murray.

As the game is set to launch later this month, here are the top things to know about the title in the run-up to launch.

Gameplay

The game will see players once again join forces with helpful neighbor Crazy Dave. The NPC will help guide players through the game and offer a mixture of new tools for the task of fending off zombies.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 will feature new plants, zombies and levels. PopCap reports that the sequel will come with added touchscreen power ups, plant food and the ability to interact directly with the undead.

Availability

PopCap's sequel will be released for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. No word yet on if the game will be released for Android and home consoles. However, if the success of the previous title is any indication than the game will find ports for many popular gaming systems.

The original Plants vs. Zombies game was a hit on iOS. PopCap's success lead the developer to port the title to Android, Chrome, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, Windows Phone and Chrome.

Price

Like the original game, Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be free-to-play. PopCap will make money off the title through advertising and by charging for in-game extras. While the game will charge for extras, PopCap reassures fans the complete game will be free.

The company reports that every zombie type and level will be free at launch. All extras in the game are optional and only offer additional content.
