Japan Earthquake 2016: Tremendous Magnitude 7.9 Quake On Coast Of Fukushima North-East; Tsunami Warning Issued

The Coast Of Fukushima North-East Japan has been hit by a 6.9 earthquake on November 22, 2016. Short tsunamis have been reported to have hit the shores approximately no higher than 3 feet.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 but the USGS later downgraded it to magnitude-6.9. Authorities warned landslides may occur in some areas and people are urged not to return to their houses until all the warnings are lifted.

Japan Earthquake News: Tsunami Warning Downgraded To Advisory After Threat Had Passed

People continue to keep a lookout after tsunami advisories triggered by the earthquake were issued. So far, short tsunamis approximately no higher than 3 feet reached the coasts. This number is pretty high; but it's not going to bring buildings down. According to Reuters, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said that the tsunami threat had now largely passed and the JMA later lifted its warnings.

Concerns were raised on possible damages on nuclear power stations that suffered a failure in the cooling system, which may overheat and lead to a meltdown. As of this writing, the danger has been averted and people were urged to evacuate immediately. This is the same region that was devastated in 2011 and NHK reminds the people of the catastrophe that left about 18,000 people dead.

There is no further report on the nuclear power plant that was knocked out in 2011. Earthquakes are not rare in Japan and people seem to be quite used to it and have contingencies in place. Japan has learned from the past and created buildings that are strong and can withstand quakes. Constructions standards are high. However, what people are really worried about is the tsunami.

While immediate fears around the quake and tsunami appear have calmed, many people in Japan have been shaken by the morning's happenings, Agence France-Presse reported. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
