Is this the new Black Orchid for Killer Instinct? [Trailer]

With each week that goes by, Double Helix keeps letting things slip for their revamp for the acclaimed fighter not seen since the mid-90's, Killer Instinct. While we've seen a smattering of the game's original roster return, a number of fighters are still M.I.A, perhaps most notably, the game's only female fighter, Black Orchid. But a brief new trailer has us wondering if the leggy secret agent has undergone a major overhaul, or if a new femme fatale is on the scene.

The original Orchid was suited as a black agent sent to investigate the organization behind the tournament in the first game. While this new fighter is a far cry from Orchid's original design (provided it is actually her), she's definitely suited for wet work.

Gone are the neon green kimono and bright collapsible staff-tonfa combo, replaced by some one or some thing that looks like it belongs more in Ninja Gaiden than Killer Instinct. She's almost a mash up of characters really - a red hood and mask covers the new fighter's face, who sports bladed arm wear that rings of the fins on Batman's gloves, Wolverine styled claws, and pure white eyes, which further add to her resemblance of Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

Double Helix hasn't confirmed her exact identity, only that she'll be a playable character once the Xbox One exclusive fighter launches this fall. Whoever this new fighter is, she's definitely deadly. The trailer shows her making quick work of Chief Thunder before striking an intimidating victory pose.

With only three characters left to re-create the game's original roster (Riptor, T.J. Combo, and Black Orchid), I'm dubious that this is a brand new character, particularly since Orchid was a fan favorite, and there's still plenty of time left once the game launches to provide new characters as DLC. Then again, why such a drastic re-design for a fan favorite? Case in point, Chief Thunder's new appearance is drastically different, but at least he's still recognizable.

In any event, Double Helix is keeping a lid on things for now. We'll keep you posted once the cat is out of the bag.
