Battlefield 3 is not meant for a ‘rehash’ on Xbox One, PS4

Apparently, some fan has demanded a port of Battlefield 3 for the upcoming next generation consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Whoever that may be, DICE has some bad news for them – the developer is not looking to port the popular Battlefield 3 to the next generation consoles – not now, not later, or anytime in the future.

At the recent Gamescom event, Executive Producer Patrick Bach spoke on the possibility of a next generation port for Battlefield 3. According to Videogamer, Bach said the company "would not rehash [Battlefield 3 for PS4 & Xbox One].” Granted, fans want some weird things, but who would want a port in the first place with Battlefield 4 on deck?

"It wouldn't be worth it," sad Bach. "I think it's better to bring back the maps like we're doing and then maybe there's some other fan favourite that people really want and we can probably bring that back as well. But the feature set and the core game of Battlefield 3 versus Battlefield 4, it would be going backwards in time."

He rightfully went on to suggest that after the announcement of Battlefield 4, going back to Battlefield 3 would seem pointless, especially when "there's nothing that is better in BF3".

"Of course, people might not agree, but in my book there's nothing that is better in BF3, so why bring it back? That would be a very retro thing to do. Maybe two generations ahead we can do that and do like a retro rehash, but then I think people will always pick Battlefield 4 to do that," Bach added.

Additionally, Bach has also turned down suggestions that the Battlefield series could become annualized, and that the company "can't build a game every year."

"I think the core Battlefield idea that we're working on at DICE is... We can't build a game at DICE every year," Bach confirmed at Gamescom, when asked if a new Battlefield title is a possibility to fill the gap left by Medal of Honor.

"You saw with Battlefield 3, for instance, it's not that there's not an urge for more Battlefield. You mentioned Premium – we [had] 18 months worth of Battlefield and people want more things during that time. Now it's been almost two years and people feel like they are continuously playing – we still have huge amounts of players playing Battlefield 3. So I think in general, people apparently want Battlefield all year round."

Battlefield 4 is currently scheduled for a release on Oct. 29 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, with a version of the game for the upcoming PS4 arriving on Nov. 15 in North America. Much like the console itself, the Xbox One version is still awaiting an official release date.
