Grand Theft Auto 5 Earns Seven Guinness World Records

By this point, I think we're all familiar with Grand Theft Auto V, and how it essentially licenses Rockstar to print money, thanks to selling well over a billion copies. It's an accomplishment that only a few games can boast, but GTA V managed to do it at breakneck speed, hitting the number in the game's first week of release. But the records didn't stop there for the franchise.

Since it's launch late this past September, GTA V has been silently cutting a bloody path, breaking the necks of other games and taking their titles like Solid Snake takes dog tags. As a matter of fact, the good people at Guinness (not the beer, though they're equally as close to my heart and liver, if not more so) has taken notice of the game, recognizing Rockstar's opus as now holding a total of seven world records:

- Best-selling action-adventure video game in 24 hours
- Best-selling video game in 24 hours
- Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
- Fastest video game to gross $1 billion
- Highest grossing video game in 24 hours
- Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
- Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure video game

"GTA totally deserves to be recognized as an icon of modern British culture, and we're thrilled to be able to feature the game in the record books," Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said in a statement published on PlayerAttack. "Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it's taken on the might of Hollywood and won. I'm also doubly proud as a Dundonian to welcome this home-grown series back into the Guinness World Records book."

The game is still making headlines for its feats not recognized by Guinness, like managing to outsell its precursor, and also managing to become the fastest-selling PSN game of all time.

With major shopping holidays like Black Friday and Christmas not far from now (and a PC port possibly on the way), it's fair to expect GTA V to keep raking in the moolah.
