Xbox One Launch News: Microsoft Sells One Million in Less Than a Day, Could Overtake Wii U Total Sales

The Xbox One Was Microsoft's Biggest Launch in Xbox History, With Over a Million Sold in 24 Hours

Just like it was predicted, the Xbox One has surpassed the Xbox 360 as the most popular Xbox in company history. Microsoft has announced during the next-gen console's launch on Friday, the company managed to sell over one million consoles worldwide in the first 24 hours of its release.

"We have the best community of gamers around the world, and this was on full display last night," said Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten in a press release on the day of the console's release. "The launch of Xbox One is truly Day One. Today is the beginning of the future of entertainment, and we could not be more proud to deliver Xbox One to fans around the world."

The company also released a few gameplay figures for some of the console's day one games:

- Over 60 million zombies have been killed in Dead Rising 3
- Over 3.6 million miles were driven in Forza Motorsport 5
- Over 7.1 million combos were pulled off in Killer Instinct
- Over 8.5 million enemies have been defeated in Ryse: Son of Rome
- Over 43.3 million Fit Points were earned in Xbox Fitness

"We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world," said Yusuf Mehdi, head of marketing and strategy. "Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season."

No doubt Microsoft is in the mood for celebrating, as figures for the Xbox One and its library will only rise with mega shopping holidays Black Friday and Christmas just around the corner.

Despite that Microsoft might have problems keeping retailers in stock, it could easily surpass total sales of Nintendo's Wii U...in the U.K.
MCV is claiming an unnamed source is reporting that the Xbox One is only a few thousand sales from doing so, and will accomplish the feat by the end of the week.

With the early sales figures, it's theoretically possible that Microsoft's Xbox One sales could surpass Nintendo's Wii U sales worldwide. Nintendo has confirmed that a mere 3.9 million Wii U systems have been sold worldwide to date. Microsoft has already managed to cover a quarter of those sales with the Xbox One in one day alone...

The Xbox One is currently available worldwide for $499. The new console claims an 8-core x86 processor and Microsoft hopes it will take the place of the family room cable box by letting you watch Blu-ray movies and TV through the console, in a "seamless transition" that lets players switch from playing games to watching shows and/or movies. It comes fully loaded with 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.
