Samsung Unveils Latest Thin and Light Notebook 9; New Versions To Run on Intel's Latest Processors

Samsung 13-inch and 15-inch Models To Run On Intel 7 Processors

The new generation of Samsung Notebook 9 lightweight laptops will be powered by Intel's latest generation of processors. With the 2017 Computer Electronics Show still a few weeks away, the South Korean electronics giant did not wait until January to give consumers a teaser of the latest addition to their Notebook 9 lightweight laptops.

Samsung's newest addition to its Notebook 9 laptops - the 13-inch and 15-inch models - will have Intel's 7th generation processor, the Kaby Lake. The refreshed version will introduce Intel's latest processor together with some tweaks to the overall design of the Notebook 9. Samsung went for a more curved chassis for its thin and light laptop adding some slim bezels to the almost edge-to-edge display. The minor revisions means that the Notebook 9 is now near 2 pounds for the 15-inch and 1.8 pounds for the 13-inch.

The regular ports will still be there, including the dual USB 3.0 ports and the single USB Type-C port, HDMI, and microSD slot. Instead of a 12-hours battery life, the two models will have a more conservative 7-hour estimate on single charging. Similar to their predecessors, the latest models of the Notebook 9 will also be lightweight. At 1.8 pounds, the 13-inch version is the lightest notebook in the market. The 15-inch version, on the other hand, tips the scale at 2.17 pounds, slightly heavier than the 12-inch MacBook which weighs 21.03 pounds.

For the hardware, the new Notebook 9 laptops come with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of solid state storage. Standard features are Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11 ac 2x2 Wi-Fi, dual 1.5-watt speakers, 720 pixels webcam, fingerprint sensor, and backlit keyboard.  The new models will run on Windows 10 Home and will be available in light tan.

Aside from the shared graphics, what makes the two models stand out are the 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display. However, given the size of the panels, this won't likely be a deal-breaker for prospective buyers. As to the price, Samsung still has to reveal that once they go on sale. Most likely, this will be revealed during the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in January.
