Sonic Director Says Doing 'Super Smash Bros.' Movie Has Legal Considerations

Fowler directed Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020 and its sequel, which comes out later this month. In an article published in ComicBook.com, questions were raised about whether Fowler would ever helm a film adaptation of the classic Super Smash Bros. games. He said that he was open to the idea of a crossover but admits to the necessary considerations to take regarding logistics.

Fowler recognized the magnitude of putting the two popular characters together despite this. "Nothing would make me happier than to just throw all the characters into a battle royale and do a big Smash Bros. thing. That would probably require some work from the lawyers before that could happen," Fowler said. "Getting Mario and Sonic in the ring, I mean everyone would be kinda dying for that, right? That's just classic."

The Sonic character and all the of the characters of the franchise are owned by Sega. Nintendo owns Mario, the Super Smash Bros. title, and several of the characters in the game. To create such an ambitious adaptation, a few legal permissions must be given by the two video game companies. Universal and Illumination are also working on an animated adaptation of the Super Mario games. The beloved Italian plumber will be played by Chris Pratt. It will also be released later this year.

At this age, with the rise of Cinematic Universes as popularized by the Avengers movies. Major characters of various video games can come together in one film. The Super Smash Bros. games themselves are already crossover of different characters from various game companies. Sonic is the first non-Nintendo character to be part of Super Smash Bros.

Donkey King, Knuckles Spin-offs Are In Development

Aside from the Super Mario films, other Nintendo characters might also make their way to the big screen. There have been early reports Donkey Kong project starring Seth Rogen, also by Illumination.

On the other hand, film adaptations, sequels, and spin-offs of several Sega properties are also in the works, seemingly to make way for a Sonic Cinematic Universe. A third installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog is currently already in development. A spin-off film of the Sonic movies starring Knuckles the Echidna is also in the works, with Idris Elba returning to the role. Knuckles is making his first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The spin-off film will be released on the Paramount Plus.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 premiered on August 8, 2021 IGN rates the film 7 out of 10, saying that it's "a fast-paced joyride that'll ring in entertainment for both fans and children."
