Call of Duty: Vanguard and Why It Did Not Sell Well for Activision

Call of Duty: Vanguard was thought to be another hit for the franchise, but the opposite seems to have happened as the game did not meet expectations in terms of sales.

Activision has attempted to explain the reason behind it in its annual report for 2021, according to GameSpot. The video game company has blamed the lackluster sales of the game to the company's execution as well as the World War II setting.

"The game's World War II setting didn't resonate with some of our community and we didn't deliver as much innovation in the premium game as we would have liked," the video game company said.

Kotaku points out in its report that "Activision doesn't mention that the game's campaign was extremely brief and cloyingly written, that its Zombies mode was widely panned, or that its seasonal content was quickly delayed." The publication has also added that the company likewise failed to mention the effects of the pandemic on the team on Sledgehammer Games, the game's developer.

GameSpot's report points out that, despite its sales not meeting Activision's expectations, it is the overall best-selling game in the United States for 2021.

How Activision is Planning to Address These Concerns with Modern Warfare 2

Activision has guaranteed that it is planning to address what it sees as the problems behind Call of Duty: Vanguard in the next release of the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

"We are working on the most ambitious plan in Call of Duty history, with over 3,000 people now working on the franchise and a return to the Modern Warfare setting that delivered our most successful Call of Duty title ever," the company said.

Activision also said that Modern Warfare 2 will be the most advanced game in the series.
